Following Boris Johnson, former US Ambassador to Moscow John Sullivan spoke out about Russian intimidation involving the use of nuclear weapons. Sullivan stated that he had heard about this not from Putin himself, but from those close to him. The diplomat also mentioned that if he were to bring it up in conversation, he would likely be called back and possibly sent for a psychiatric evaluation. It is expected that more stories like this will come to light, as in 2015 Putin publicly announced on television that he was willing to use nuclear force after the annexation of Crimea. Journalists now have a responsibility to interview leaders such as Merkel and Hollande and ask about their experiences with this type of pressure from the Kremlin.
